Q: What is a digital photo frame and why do I need one?

A: Digital photo frames are the latest innovation allowing simple access and viewing of all your digital photos. Most of us have these stored (and largely unseen) on various memory cards, personal computers, digital cameras and mobile phones around the place.

The digital photo frame is a unique way of displaying those pictures that mean so much – whether in your home or your office. Instead of showing just one photo in a traditional frame, the digital frame with its ultra-sharp LCD screen and in-built electronics, allows you to show 100's or even 1000's of photos – in a non-stop slide-show of memories – which is also easy to setup and update.

Unlike your PC slide show, or stored mobile phone photos, this is a dedicated electronic photo album and a delightful way to present those images that mean so much. It is a great gift for friends and relatives and more and more it is a product that offers amazing value – as screen qualities improve and features are added.

Q: How do I use my digital photo frame?

A: Start by just inserting a memory card or stick. Typically the frames accept a wide variety of the most common memory cards and many additionally accept USB memory sticks. You can then adjust settings like the speed and style of transition between pictures. In addition, the Parrot 7 inch model has full bluetooth support meaning you can wirelessly send your photo from your computer, mobile phone or digital camera.

Q: How do I choose the right one for me?

A: Depending on your budget and frame colour preference, all of our digital frames offer high quality LCD screens with the ability to display photos in a slideshow and all are able to vary the time each photo is displayed. If you also want the frame to be able to play background music and play video files, then you will need one of the 8 inch models. If you need built-in memory then you specifically will need either the Parrot 7 inch modell.

Q: What resolution is the LCD screen?

A: Here are the LCD screen resolutions and aspect ratios for all models:

Model Resolution (w x h) Aspect Ratio*
PARROT 7 Inch 410 x 234 pixels 3:2
OLIN 8 Inch 720 x 480 pixels 3:2
SUN 8 Inch 640 x 480 pixels 4:3

• Aspect ratio refers to the ratio of width to height. For example standard digital photos are usually taken with an aspect ratio of 4:3.

• No matter what size and aspect ratio your digital photo is, the digital photo frame will automatically display it correctly and resize it to fit your screen.

Q: Does my digital photo frame have built-in memory?

A: One model we sell has built-in memory. All the other models rely on you inserting a memory card into the frame with the photos you wish to display.

The Parrot 7 Inch model has enough memory to store over 300 photos. You can transfer photos to it via a memory card, a Bluetooth connection or from your PC via a USB cable.

Q: How do I update the memory card?

A: The easiest way to add and delete images or files on your memory card is via your PC. Typically you would copy your photos from your camera or mobile phone into your "My Pictures" folder on your PC. You can then view, adjust and edit your photos as you see fit.

Now you want to copy this folder onto a memory card. You can do this in several ways:

1. Does your PC have built in memory card reader? If so, insert your card and copy the picture files to this drive.

2. Use your camera as a memory card writer. Insert your card into the camera (which is in turn connected to the PC). Copy your picture selection back onto camera. Then remove the card.

3. If you would like more flexibility with different card types, buy a simple multi-card reader (available to buy on our website) and connect it via a USB port to your computer. This allows you to copy directly between your PC and 33 different types of memory card – effectively becoming an additional storage device (or drive) listed under "My Computer".

For more info on memory cards, check out our Memory Cards FAQ.

Q: Does it run off mains power, batteries or USB?

A: The answer depends on which model digital photo frame you mean. The SUN 8 inch and Parrot 7 inch models run only off mains power with their supplied power adapter and cable. The Desktop Digital Photo Frame & Clock model runs off either batteries (2 x AAA) or also via the USB cable, plugged into your PC. The OLIN 8 inch model runs off either the built-in rechargeable battery or off mains power.

Q: How do I put music files onto the memory card?

A: First, use your PC and popular audio editing software to convert your music to MP3 format. The digital picture frame will only play MP3 files so all Windows Media Player™ and / or iTunes™ files will have to be converted first.

For simplicity, we recommend using Windows Media Player™ to "rip" your required MP3 files directly from your own audio CDs that you insert into your PC. This way there is no copyright concerns or Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection issues.

Once you have access to the MP3 files on your PC, you can then use a card reader or your digital camera to transfer those files to your memory card, as described in the question above this one.

Q: Not all my photos are displaying, why not?

A: Your digital picture frame is designed to show photos following the same camera industry standard JPEG format as digital cameras. Some images, such as web images, scanned images, or photos in RAW format, are not stored in industry standard JPEG format and therefore cannot be displayed correctly on the Digital Picture Frame. Please use your photo editing PC application to convert such images into standard JPEG format before viewing them on your digital photo frame.

Q: My digital photo frame supports AV (Video) output, what is that?

A: AV Output (or Video output) means that your frame can be connected to a TV to show its photos on the TV. In this way your digital photo frame can be used as a slideshow player - most useful if you have a large screen LCD or Plasma TV for example. This feature is available on our 8 inch and 10.4 inch models with the supplied cables.

Q: Can it display files in PPT (PowerPoint), XLS (Excel) or PDF formats?

A: Not directly. Digital photo frames are only designed to play standard media formats including photos (JPEG), music (MP3) and video files (e.g. MPEG, AVI, WMV). So in order to show a PowerPoint slide deck or a PDF document on your digital frame, you would need to convert each slide or page into a JPEG format image file and then copy all the JPEG files onto your memory card to watch on your digital photo frame.

Q: Can I rotate a photo on my digital photo frame?

A: Yes. Use the ROTATE button on the remote control (or on the control panel on the frame) to rotate the picture. Note that the rotated picture will return to its original orientation after you power down the frame. You will need to edit the picture on your PC if you want to permanently change the orientation - you can do this using the Windows standard built-in "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" software.

Q: Will the LCD screen wear out if I keep showing the same photo?

A: No. Since LCD technology does not "burn-in" or fade like other display technologies do, there is no problem in displaying the same photo for a long period of time.

Q: Can I leave my digital photo frame running 24x7?

A: It is definitely NOT recommended to leave your digital photo frame running non-stop. Like all electronics, non-stop usage can lead to overheating. The recommended maximum usage time is 10 hours with at least a 30 minute cooling off period before turning it back on.

Our 8 and 10 inch model digital frames come with a standby on/off button which is accessible via the remote control. In addition, the SUN 8 Inch model allows you to automatically schedule power ON and power OFF times to suit your requirements.

Q: How can I watch DVD movies on my digital photo frame?

A: Although your digital frame cannot accept a DVD disc directly, you can convert the movie (via your PC) to a recognised movie file format such as AVI, MPEG or WMV and then simply transfer that file to your memory card to watch on your digital frame.

This conversion process can be done on your PC very easily using free software such as AutoGK. For a tutorial and instructions on the AutoGK software, check out the home page here: http://www.autogk.me.uk/
